Mbosso, whose real name is Mbwana Yusuph Kilungi, is a prominent Tanzanian Bongo Flava artist renowned for his soulful vocals, percussive guitar playing, and emotive storytelling lyrics.
Mbosso began his music career in 2013 as “Maromboso,” a member of the popularYamoto Band. The group quickly rose to fame, even being named the best band of 2015 at the Kilimanjaro Music Awards. The band, however, broke up around 2015, leading Mbosso to face a challenging period.
The breakup left Mbosso at a crossroads, unsure of his next career move without the structure of the band.
He had no formal management or bookings for shows, which effectively halted his ability to perform and earn a living as a musician.
The lack of music opportunities led to financial difficulties. During this period, he even resorted to playing football as a way to pass the time and find some form of engagement.
Mbosso described this time as a “dark past” and had nearly given up on making a comeback in the music industry. His later emotional reaction during his unveiling at the Wasafi label highlighted the depth of his struggles.
His fortune changed when his former label mate, Rich Mavoko, reached out for a collaboration, which ultimately led to him being noticed and signed by Diamond Platnumz’s WCB Wasafi record label in 2018, revitalizing his career.
This opportunity revitalized his career. He released several hit songs under the label, including “Watakubali,” “Nimekuzoea,” “Hodari,” and “Nadekezwa”. His song “Hodari” won the Video of the Year award in 2019.
In March 2021, he released his debut studio album, Definition of Love, featuring collaborations with various artists like Mr Flavour and Diamond Platnumz.
In November 2022, he released his debut EP, Khan, which incorporated Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Zouk influences and was streamed over 50 million times on Boomplay.
