As Kenya inches closer to the 2027 General Election, the political temperature is rising and the familiar choreography of alliances, betrayals, and realignments is once again on full display.
The country’s major political formations President William Ruto’s UDA, Raila Odinga’s ODM, and Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement are all recalibrating, repositioning, and quietly counting numbers as the next electoral contest begins to take shape.
At the heart of the emerging opposition strategy is a name that has hovered near the presidency for decades but has never quite crossed the finish line: Kalonzo Musyoka.
According to credible sources within the opposition, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition has settled on Kalonzo Musyoka as its preferred presidential flagbearer for 2027.
The decision, sources say, was reached during a high level consultative meeting chaired by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and held in Mombasa last month.
The meeting is said to have brought together senior figures from the United Opposition Alliance, with discussions centring on generational transition, regional balance, and the coalition’s long-term survival in a post Raila era.
While veteran opposition leader the Late Raila Odinga who contested the presidency in 2022 alongside Martha Karua remains an influential political force, insiders say the coalition is increasingly focused on succession planning and continuity rather than another Raila candidature.
Perhaps the most striking outcome of the Mombasa talks was the reported agreement that Martha Karua, leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), would deputise Kalonzo as his running mate.
The Kalonzo Karua pairing would revive the reformist credentials that defined the 2022 Azimio ticket, blending Kalonzo’s long experience in coalition politics with Karua’s image as a principled, no nonsense reformer.
In 2022, Karua deputised Raila Odinga in a fiercely contested election that ended in defeat.
President William Ruto, running under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, won with 50.49 per cent of the vote, narrowly edging out Odinga in one of Kenya’s closest presidential races.
Ruto went on to become Kenya’s fifth President since independence, securing the presidency on his first attempt.
Kalonzo’s recent elevation within Azimio has been followed by a carefully choreographed diplomatic push abroad.
His upcoming visit to the United States, coming shortly after his appointment as Azimio’s coalition leader, is widely seen as an effort to consolidate his status as the opposition’s presumptive presidential candidate.
The visit will include engagements with the Kenyan diaspora, faith leaders, and international partners an increasingly important constituency in both fundraising and political legitimacy.
“I am looking forward to attending the 74th National Prayer Breakfast and engaging with our diaspora community and other partners on issues of shared values, leadership and nationhood,” Kalonzo said.
He noted that the trip would focus on faith based dialogue, leadership reflection, and strengthening ties with Kenyans living abroad.
For Kalonzo Musyoka, the 2027 contest may represent both a culmination and a final roll of the dice.
A perennial coalition player often kingmaker rather than king he now appears closer than ever to leading a united opposition into battle.
Whether the Kalonzo, Karua ticket can overcome the structural advantages of incumbency, heal old opposition fractures, and convert elite consensus into grassroots momentum remains an open question.
